Do you know the difference between Jesus & Christ?
Do you know the difference between Jesus & Christ?
Christ was not Jesus' last name.
Often people say, “Jesus Christ” in the same way one might say, “John Smith,” as a first and last name. We also hear people use the names Christ and Jesus interchangeably, as if they refer to the same thing, especially in sermons and modern Christian Rock songs.
But this is a misunderstanding that most of us have not given much thought to, or if we have, maybe we never found any clarity. So here we go:
Jesus was born Yeshua ben Yosef, or as we would say it in English, “Jesus son of Joseph.” So where does the “Christ” come in?
The literal translation of Christ is "anointed" or "anointed one," and is better understood as that part of God in each of us that you might call your higher awareness, intuition or your enlightened self. Paul the Apostle referred to this in Colossians 1:27 when he said “...Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Each of us has this Christ potential inside and as Jesus spiritually progressed through life, he eventually fully realized and exemplified this Christ potential and became known as Jesus Christ.
The historical man Jesus died a little over two thousand years ago but Christ is the everlasting essence of God in each of us that lives on today, just waiting to be expressed and fully realized by anyone and everyone. When we do this, we too become "anointed" ones.
